The Rex Hotel has a long and storied history.

The Rex Hotel Vietnam has an unconventional history: It used to be a French garage, was expanded by the Vietnamese, and then was used by the United States government for information and espionage purposes in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The hotel was changed in a massive renovation and opened in 1990 for the first time as the Rex Hotel Vietnam as the slightly cheesy, atmospheric government-run place it is today. There are a range of rooms, but all are large and clean, with feathery carpets and bamboo detailing everywhere. The lampshades are big royal crowns, which you have to see to believe. There's good indirect lighting throughout. Some of the suites have beaded curtains and Christmas lights over the bathroom mirrors.

The beds and pillows are firm but plump, and there are good views from some balconies. Each suite has a fax machine. The Rex Hotel Vietnam is in a great central location, across from a square that has a lively carnival atmosphere at night. It is also known for its rooftop bar, with its panoramic Ho Chi Minh view. The pool is small, but nice in hot weather and it's in a quiet courtyard.
